Professional cleaning in progress — worker in safety harness inside a drained cistern, scrubbing walls with stiff brush. Shows the physical, hands-on nature of proper cleaning.
Split image: left = cistern floor before cleaning (dark sediment layer, discolored walls). Right = same cistern after cleaning (clean concrete, clear water).

What Happens During the Cleaning
Step 1 — Drain. A submersible pump removes all water from the cistern, including the sediment-laden water at the very bottom. Duration: 30-60 minutes for a standard 10,000L tank.
Step 2 — Scrub. This is the step that matters most. A trained technician physically scrubs every interior surface — walls, floor, corners, around pipe entries — with stiff brushes and a chlorine solution. This mechanical action dislodges biofilm that chemical treatment alone cannot penetrate. All loosened material is swept to the drain point and pumped out.
Step 3 — Disinfect. After scrubbing, interior surfaces are treated with a concentrated chlorine solution and allowed to sit for 30+ minutes. This kills remaining microorganisms on the freshly exposed surfaces.
Step 4 — Rinse. The disinfectant is flushed from the cistern with clean water and pumped out, preventing excessive chlorine from entering the household supply.
Step 5 — Refill. Fresh water is introduced. Post-refill chlorine residual is verified to confirm adequate disinfection of the new water.
