Salt Chlorine Generator Installation (Pool + Cistern)

Instalación de Generador de Cloro por Sal (Alberca + Cisterna)

Generate your own chlorine from salt — for your pool and your cistern

From $15,000 MXN ~$860 USD

Salt chlorine generation (electrolysis) replaces liquid and tablet chlorine with a self-renewing system that produces pure chlorine from ordinary salt dissolved in water. Originally a pool technology, we adapt it for dual use: keeping your pool pristine AND maintaining a chlorine residual in your cistern water between pipa deliveries. Lower operating costs, no chemical handling, no chlorine storage, consistent disinfection — the upgrade that changes how you manage water in Cabo.

The Problem It Solves

Chlorine is the primary defense against bacterial growth in stored water — both in your pool and in your cistern. But managing chlorine manually is a constant battle in Cabo:

For pools: Liquid chlorine degrades in Cabo’s heat (shelf life drops to weeks), tablet chlorine produces cyanuric acid buildup that eventually makes chlorine ineffective, and inconsistent manual dosing creates the feast-or-famine cycle — over-chlorinated water that burns eyes one day, under-chlorinated green water the next.

For cisterns: Chlorine residual decays within 2-5 days in Cabo’s warm ground temperatures. Between pipa deliveries, your stored water spends most of its life with zero active disinfection — leaving it vulnerable to biofilm growth and bacterial contamination.

A salt chlorine generator solves both problems with a single system.

How Salt Chlorination Works

The chemistry is elegant: ordinary salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) dissolved in water passes through an electrolytic cell — a chamber containing titanium plates with a small electrical current. The current splits the salt molecule, producing sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine) and hydrogen gas. The chlorine disinfects the water. As the chlorine is consumed, it recombines back into salt. The cycle repeats.

You add salt once (initial charge) and top up occasionally as splash-out and backwash remove small amounts. The system generates chlorine continuously, on demand, at the rate you set. No buying chlorine. No storing chemicals. No measuring and pouring. No running out.

The salt concentration required (3,000-4,000 ppm) is roughly 1/10 the salinity of ocean water. You can barely taste it. Your pool water feels noticeably softer — swimmers consistently prefer salt pools over traditionally chlorinated ones.

The Dual-Use Innovation: Pool + Cistern

Here’s what makes our installation different: we don’t just chlorinate your pool. We add a small dosing line from the generator to your cistern.

A metering valve and timer inject a controlled micro-dose of generated chlorine into the cistern at scheduled intervals — maintaining a consistent 0.2-0.5 mg/L free chlorine residual between pipa deliveries. This is the same residual level that municipal water systems maintain worldwide.

The result: your cistern water has continuous active disinfection protection instead of the typical pattern of chlorine present for 2-3 days after delivery, then zero protection for the remaining 10-18 days. Biofilm growth is suppressed. Bacterial counts stay low. Water quality between deliveries is dramatically more consistent.

This doesn’t replace the need for cistern cleaning — physical scrubbing is still necessary to remove accumulated sediment and established biofilm. But it dramatically slows the recontamination rate between cleanings, extending the effective life of each cleaning and improving daily water quality.

The Cost Math

Pool Chlorination Costs (Annual)

MethodAnnual CostIssues
Liquid chlorine (manual)$10,000-24,000 MXNDegrades in heat, inconsistent dosing, chemical handling
Chlorine tablets$8,000-18,000 MXNCyanuric acid buildup, stabilizer lock, inconsistent
Salt chlorine generator$2,500-5,000 MXN (salt + electricity)Consistent, automated, no chemical handling

Annual pool savings: $5,000-19,000 MXN/year.

Cistern Disinfection Value

Maintaining a chlorine residual in your cistern between pipa deliveries has downstream economic benefits that compound:

  • Extended biofilm suppression → longer effective interval between cleanings (one fewer cleaning per year saves $2,000-4,000 MXN)
  • Reduced bacterial load → lower risk of contamination events → protection of health
  • Better baseline water quality → downstream filters last longer (chlorine prevents organic growth that clogs filters)

Estimated cistern disinfection value: $3,000-6,000 MXN/year in extended maintenance intervals and filter life.

Payback Period

ItemCost
Generator + installation$15,000-35,000 MXN (depending on pool size)
Annual operating cost$2,500-5,000 MXN (salt + electricity)
Annual savings (pool + cistern combined)$8,000-25,000 MXN
Payback period8-18 months

After payback, you save $5,000-20,000 MXN per year while getting consistently better water quality in both your pool and your cistern.

What the Installation Involves

Day 1 (3-5 hours):

  1. Site survey: assess pool plumbing, cistern access, electrical availability
  2. Install generator unit and electrolytic cell on pool equipment pad
  3. Plumb cell into pool return line (after filter, before return jets)
  4. Install cistern dosing line with metering valve and timer
  5. Add initial salt charge to pool
  6. Calibrate output levels for pool and cistern
  7. Verify chlorine production and residual levels
  8. Configure dosing timer for cistern injection schedule
  9. Walkthrough of controls, adjustment, and maintenance

You receive: A working salt chlorine system generating chlorine for both your pool and your cistern. A chlorine test kit for verifying residual levels. An operating guide with recommended seasonal adjustments.

Who This Is For

Pool owners who are tired of the chlorine routine. If you’re buying tablets or liquid, storing chemicals, measuring doses, and still getting green water during heat waves — the salt generator eliminates all of that.

Homeowners concerned about cistern water quality. If you understand water age and know your chlorine decays to zero days after each pipa delivery — the cistern dosing adapter maintains continuous protection.

Vacation rental operators. Consistent pool water without relying on a pool person to dose correctly while you’re away. Consistent cistern water between guest turnovers. Both managed automatically.

Mantenimiento

Salt chlorine generators are low-maintenance but not zero-maintenance:

  • Salt level: Check monthly with a salt test strip. Top up 1-2 bags per year ($100-200 MXN each).
  • Cell inspection: Inspect the electrolytic cell every 3-6 months for calcium scale buildup. Clean with dilute acid if needed (5-minute process). Self-cleaning cells reduce this to annual.
  • Cell replacement: Cells last 3-7 years depending on usage. Replacement cells cost $5,000-12,000 MXN — still far cheaper than years of liquid/tablet chlorine.
  • Cistern dosing calibration: Verify cistern chlorine residual monthly with the included test kit. Adjust timer/valve if residual is too high (taste) or too low (no protection).
